The Finnish version of the toast “cheers” or “salute” is “kippis”. There are various legends on the origins of the word. Here’s one:
“When the first wave of Finnish shipbuilders reached the English coast (early 10th century), they immediately headed for the nearest pub. Being hard workers, harder drinkers and with harsh manners soon enough they ended up in a bit of trouble. Legend has
it that the english proprietor of the establishment refused further service unless the rowdy rogues promised ‘to keep peace on earth’. They complied, reinforcing their pledge with a toast of ‘kippis’ with each drink they downed.
So keep peace, kippis!”
